Termites cause $5 billion worth of damage each year in the U.S. alone—damage that is not covered by most homeowner’s insurance. Termites are a concern for homeowners in 49 of the 50 states in the U.S. Homeowners now have a way to prevent and eliminate termites.
Are you inviting termites?
The first thing to do is to make your home a poor candidate for infestation. In general, the goal is to reduce moisture and organic matter around your home, and to prevent wood materials from making contact with the ground.
1. Don’t affix wooden posts or trellises to exterior walls.
2. Keep mulch, wood debris, scrap wood, and firewood away from your home.
3. Repair leaky faucets, doors, windows, roofs, and gutters.
4. Remove all leaves from gutters and foundation.
5. Grade soil so that water drains away from the house.
6. Ventilate crawl space and attic to reduce humidity.
7. Cover at least 90% of the soil in the crawl space with plastic sheeting.
8. Remove all wood debris from crawl space.
Do I have termites? What can I do to protect my home?
Termites often leave signs of their presence. Look for small holes in wood trim and drywall. You may notice mud tunnels (shelter tubes) on foundation walls or on floor joists and sill plates. You may have seen what appear to be flying ants. Often, these are actually termite swarmers leaving their nest to start a new colony. Keep in mind, though, just because you don’t see termites or termite damage, that doesn’t mean they’re not there. That’s why it is important to have The Bug Man provide a professional inspection of your home to ensure it is termite free. Here's a video with an example of how we check your home for termites on a yearly basis. After The Bug Man inspects your home, we will make recommendations of what can be done to make them unwelcome. We will also make recommendations of ways to prevent a future termite infestation or ways to eliminate an active termite infestation.
